What is an observation port?

Observation ports are hexagonal nuts and gaskets with a clear viewing window, typically made of plastic. Observation ports may be installed in both rigid and flexible containers and may be applicable for some NEMA-rated enclosures.

Sizing & Specification

At this time, there are no applicable observation window specifications. However, most of these devices do meet the requirements of SAE AS26860, which governs humidity indication, except for the parts pertaining to the humidity indicating cards.

To get started, select the correct size for your observation port and choose between the different finishes available (e.g. carbon steel, stainless steel, or other materials) to suit your equipment and application.

At this time, AGM offers observation windows with the following dimensions:

  • Viewing Diameter: 0.55 in (14 mm) or 1.0 in (25 mm)
  • Mounting Hole: 1.05 in (26 mm) or 1.45 in (37 mm)

AGM observation windows are rated up to a 10 psi internal pressure.

Benefits Of Using Observation Ports

The primary benefit of observation ports is that a viewing window provides for the quick and easy observation of a container or sealed enclosure’s contents without the need for opening the sealed container.

Industry Applications

Most customers install two observation windows; one to look through and one to shine a light into. Sometimes they are placed on opposite sides of the container so it is easy to see light coming in from the opposite side. If you can see the light, it means the container does not have a load in it.

Observation ports can be used to safely observe objects within sealed enclosures in basic storage transportation to more dangerous environments including hazardous material holding tanks, furnaces, water tanks, and more.

This thread is misleading because it actually has a maximum major diameter of 1.027”. It is commonly used on the small bung of a 55 gallon drum. The reason our humidity indicators have this thread is that they were initially used most commonly on 55 gallon drums.
