Beehive Tie Downs

Now there is a method of securing your beehives during transport that:
   
  • Won't damage your beehives
  • Is adjustable
  • Doesn't rust
  • Is reusable
  • Won't loosen its tension on a sunny day
  • Doesn't require any tools
  • Won't aggravate your bees
  • Holds constant tension
  • Won't decrease load capability
  • Is unaffected by mud, water, sand, snow, hot or cold weather
   

Now consider the alternatives...
• Metal Banding • Plastic Banding • Staples • Wood Cleats

All these methods have distinct disadvantages.  Not one can be applied as easily as the KEVLOK® strap.

Metal banding requires expensive and cumbersome tensioners, crimpers, crimp fasteners, rolls of banding, roll holders and banding cutters.  There is an ever-present risk of cutting hands and clothing and since metal banding is affected by temperature, it will loosen its tension on warm days.

Plastic banding grows brittle due to use and exposure and it will not hold tension for extended periods.  It can stretch, crack if stepped on or split lengthwise.  It also requires banding tools for tensioning.  Neither plastic nor metal banding are environmentally friendly since there is a tendency for the scraps to get left
behind in farmers' fields.

As for Staples and Wood Cleats, the need to repeatedly pound in and pull out nails or staples eventually destroys expensive woodenware (supers, brood boxes and bottom boards).  Accordingly, the lifetime of a maintained super is reduced from at least 20 years to 5 or 6, not to mention the aggravation to the bees caused by the pounding.

So to save time and money, use KEVLOK® straps on your hives.

 

Three configurations are available to meet your needs

1. Kevlok Beehive Banding Straps

Banding Strap This strap utilizes the amazing KEVLOK® over-center tensioning buckle.  It is a loop strap with a quick-disconnect.  Made with 2,500 lb. tensile bulked nylon webbing and 1,000 lb. tensile hardware, the strap is extremely durable and will last for years.  Webbing is bright yellow, making the strap highly visible for night-loading (and it's non-aggravating to bees).  They adjust from 9 to 12 feet, depending on length ordered, down to 1 foot.

Banding StrapHow to Use It: Just loop the strap vertically around the stack, attach the quick-disconnect hook to the buckle, take up the slack through the buckle and close the buckle to apply up to 125 pounds of tension by hand — no tools needed!  The whole procedure takes seconds!

Your hive stacks can then be easily moved without danger of coming apart.  When positioned in their new location, just release the buckle easily by pulling up on the lever with the end of the strap, then unhook the quick-disconnect and remove the strap — in seconds!

Pallet StrapThis strap utilizes the KEVLOK® over-center tensioning buckle.  Made with 2,500 lb. tensile bulked nylon webbing and 1,000 lb. tensile hardware, this strap is extremely durable and will last for years.  Webbing is bright yellow.  Straps adjust from 7 or 10 feet, depending on length ordered, down to 3 feet.

 

2. Kevlok Beehive Pallet Straps

Close-Up of Pallet HookThe pallet hooks (1,000 lb. tensile) fit snugly around standard 2 x 4 runners (actual dimensions are 1-1/2" x 3-1/2") without damaging the wood.  The hooks, with webbing attached, have an extremely low profile (3/16") against the outside of the runners, so the same number of hives can be loaded as with any conventional alternative.

of the same bottom board.  This centers the
strap over the load.  Then tighten and close.

 

3. Kevlok Beehive Truck Straps

Truckload StrapThis strap is made with 2,500 lb. tensile bulked nylon webbing, a 1,500 lb. ratchet buckle and a 1,000 lb. end hardware.  It is extremely durable and will last for years.  Stock color of strap is gray.  This strap is available in lengths of 15 feet for pickup trucks and 25 feet for flatbed or other large trucks.  Each strap can adjust down to 2 feet.  End fittings are 1" vinyl-coated S-hooks for temporary attachment to eye bolts, slots or rods in order to secure your beehives in a truck.  Caution: over-tightening may cause damage to load.
