Bulk Silica Gel

Whether you are using bulk silica gel to minimize the negative effects of moisture damage due to climatic changes, minimize existing moisture contact, or as preventative measure, AGM offers a variety of bulk silica gel desiccants to meet your needs.

AGM’s offerings include indicating and non-indicating silica beads, as well as custom mixtures ranging from 0.08 mm to 8 mm in bead size. If your application requires non-indicating silica gel, be sure to check out AGM’s humidity indicator cards.

The Facts:
Silica gel is silicon dioxide (SiO2), which is an amorphous form of silica that is manufactured from silicate and sulfuric acid. ... Read More

Silica gel is a naturally occurring mineral that is purified and processed into either a beaded or granular form. In addition, it is non-corrosive and chemically inert. When used as a desiccant, silica gel has an average pore size of 24 angstroms (24A).

Silica gel desiccant is intended to lower the humidity level in an enclosed environment. Silica gel has interconnected pores that form a vast surface area that will attract and hold water by adsorption and capillary condensation, enabling silica gel desiccant to adsorb about 40% of its weight in water vapor at 100% humidity without changing shape or size!

Silica gel desiccant performs best at room temperature between 70°F to 90°F (21°C to 32°C), and at high humidity levels between 60% to 90% relative humidity. Though the rate of moisture pick-up will slow down as temperatures increase above 100°F (38°C), silica gel desiccant will continue to adsorb moisture at temperatures of up to 150°F (65°C).

Indicating silica gel is commonly used to provide a quick visual inspection of the saturation level of moisture within the desiccant for a variety of industrial applications, such as compressed air dryers or gas drying breathers.  However, some forms of indicating silica gel can be used to protect non-consumable packaged goods.  For example, flower-drying silica gel works great for drying flowers from your wedding or other special occasions.

Please note, indicating blue silica gel contains cobalt chloride, so it should never be used in its loose form in contact with products intended for human consumption, such as food or pharmaceuticals.
