SUMMARY

The Machine Operator - Trainee is responsible for performing a variety of functions to assist the Machine Shop Department.  Must possess mechanical aptitude and be able to learn how to read drawings or material lists to produce machined parts.

Employees who are in the “Trainee” position are expected to uphold and abide by all Company policies and rules, including AGM’s “Courtesy and Professionalism Policy.”  As such, a Trainee Employee is not only expected to incorporate the Courtesy and Professionalism Policy in their dealings with AGM Employees, but also in their dealings with AGM customers, vendors and visitors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the direction of the Machine Shop Manager, the Machine Operator - Trainee learns to make production parts per AGM drawings.
  • The Machine Operator - Trainee learns to operate vertical milling machines, lathes, drill presses, circular saws, band saws, grinders, power brakes, belt sanders and an assortment of hand and power tools.
  • The Trainee learns to meet or exceed par on a regular basis and learns how to cooperate with the Machine Shop Manager on methods of increasing efficiency on making and/or correcting parts made in the Machine Shop.
  • Learns how to complete all paperwork accurately and keep work area clean, report or correct any unsafe condition immediately.
  • Learns to ensure that all ISO (International Organization for Standardization) procedures are followed.
  • Maintains a satisfactory attendance and punctuality record.
  • Other duties may be assigned by a Manager/Supervisor in other areas or departments as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess a mechanical aptitude and be able to use hands to work with large and small parts.  Some experience with hand and machine shop tools and the ability to read numbers and instructions from assembly prints is necessary.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

SUMMARY
 
Learns to inspect and test vendor-supplied and AGM-manufactured products.  Knows how to utilize various inspection techniques and has a basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Learns how to compile and determine conformance to applicable specifications.  Learns how to ensure that necessary certifications are in order to meet customer requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Knows how to read and interpret standard drawings and specifications for inspection of parts, equipment and fixtures.  Learns how to verify certification of processes and material on incoming products as required.  Learns to take directions from Senior Inspectors and/or Quality Systems Manager on acceptance standards and conveyance of quality issues.
  • Learns how to select products for tests at specified stages in the production process and how to test products for qualities such as dimensions, performance and mechanical characteristics.  Knows how to utilize GD&T for dimensional requirements.  Learns how to set up and perform destructive and nondestructive tests on materials, parts or products to measure performance, life or material characteristics.
  • Learns to record test data and inspection records.  Learns to evaluate data and write reports to accept or reject parts in accordance with Company procedures and customer requirements.  Learns to identify, report or correct problems with equipment, material or procedures and also learns how to recommend modifications of existing procedures to achieve optimum quality within limits of Company capability.
  • Learns to complete paperwork and assigned tasks quickly and accurately from Supervisor or Senior Inspector(s).
  • Very good computer skills are required.
  • Learns how to ensure that all ISO (International Organization for Standardization) procedures are followed.
  • Maintains a satisfactory attendance and punctuality record.
  • Other duties may be assigned by a Manager/Supervisor in other areas or departments as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate’s Degree with an emphasis on Inspection, Machine Shop or some other technical manufacturing field is preferred. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in inspection is preferred.
